Yes the mountain's high enough, and the valley's low enough...

I'm going to do a quicky for the book give-a-way this morning.

The book for todays give-away is "On Bear Mountain" by Deborah Smith--a signed brand spanking new copy.
About "On Bear Mountain" -
From Publishers Weekly: A hillbilly girl from Georgia and a rebellious Brooklyn boy find out the hard way that some family ties bind tighter than others in this highly readable novel by the author of A Place to Call Home. Ursula Powell lives in the shadow of the Iron Bear, a sculpture commissioned by a distant relative for a local college campus as a tribute to the ursine presence in Bear Creek, Ga. Fashioned by a New York artist from scrap metal donated by local families, the Bear sparks a smoldering feud between the poor, chicken-farming Powells and their wealthier chicken-processing-plant cousins, the Tibers. When the Tibers threaten to trash the Bear, Ursula's father scrapes together money the family can ill afford to install the sculpture in the Powell pasture. Resenting her father for the hardship she believes he has brought on the family, scrappy Ursula grows up fighting class oppression and backwoods superstitions. Meanwhile, Quentin Riconni, son of the artist who created the Bear, also grows up resenting his father. Quentin and his mother live in poverty in Brooklyn, while the senior Riconni devotes himself to his unprofitable art upstate. Not until 20 years after Quentin's father's death are his sculptures applauded, earning millions of dollars for his widow and son. When Quentin discovers that the Bear is owned by the Powells, he sets out on a journey of self-discovery fated to include Ursula.
To win this book - here's all you have to do. I have one signed copy, so the first one to figure it out gets it:
In Tender Graces, Virginia Kate hears Momma's radio - she says: Momma next went to the kitchen and ice rattled cold. Then soft music floated into my room and a woman sang deep and rusty, like summertime.
What song is Virginia Kate (and Momma) listening to? Who is singing it?
First one who guesses right - receives Deborah Smith's "On Bear Mountain."

Oh my, that's tough! I'm gonna say Loretta Lynn, though I don't remember her voice being particularly rusty. Hm.

How about Patsy Cline?

Lawd! Y'all making me think maybe I should change the way VK describes the singer's voice -- hmmmm...I think I still like "rusty" - but maybe rusty is subjective...maybe it's the "Deep" part that's not working....hmmmmmmmm

So far no one's got it right...and remember, the song too - which really, that's the easy part *teehee*

Love the Friendship Ball journey idea! I'll guess 'Retha's R-E-S-P-E-C-T. :)

Morning there on your gorgeous mountain. The book sounds good!

i can't wait till your book is out, looking forward to reading it. my dad passed away a year ago november and i have only read 1 book since his passing, and it wasn't even a good book. yours i think i will enjoy very much. as for the song ???????????? just don't know....

Lawd! I thought everyone would get this and I'd have a winner first off this morning *LAUGHING!*

Hmm, either I will need to make that more clear in the book - or I think it may be cool to let readers interpret who they think the singer is - and what the song is...which, again, the song is easy to guess.

haw! this is fun for me - if no one guesses within 24-hours, perhaps I'll give a HINT!

You are worrying me. I'm afraid I'm going to get my "southern" card pulled because I can't figure this out. I'm going to go think!

Debbie said...

OK. I'm going out on a limb here and saying "Summertime" sung by Ella Fitzgerald.

Was it Billie Holiday?

Barb Davis said...

Was it Billie Holiday singing Lady Sings The Blues?

Kathryn Magendie said...

Okay - I'm laughing so hard here -- I just read everything out to Good Man Roger ---

Oh! I cain't tell all yallses who is close! That wouldn't be fair!....

But, I'm laughing because my little thought of people "getting" who I was talking about in that scene in my book isn't working out as i thought *laugh*

Unless...as I said, leaving it to interpretation is the cool thing...

OHhhhh! ....!!

Barb Davis said...

Is it Billie Holiday singing God Bless The Child? THIS IS HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathryn Magendie said...

I'm about to wet my drawers....

Kathryn Magendie said...

Okay - here is a hint:

Someone has the song right
Someone has the singer right

That's all I'm saying!

laughing...

Barb Davis said...

Is it "Summertime" by Billie Holiday?

Barb Davis said...

Was it Stormy Weather by Billie Holiday? I'm going to get this right IF IT KILLS ME!!!!!! Do you think I'm competitive?LOL

Barb Davis said...

Thank goodness!! I was going to keep guessing until you closed your blog down to get rid of me.LOL

Jessica Nelson said...

Huh. I don't even think I've ever heard Billie Holiday sing. Congrats Barbara! :-)

Sandra Leigh said...

Okay, now I'm in trouble. I can't remember who's guessed what, or who's sung what. I need a chalkboard! I was just about to guess Billie Holiday singing "Summertime", and I saw I'd been beaten to the punch. Okay. Lena Horne singing "Summertime." Did she even do that? :>)

I think I like the idea of leaving it open to interpretation, though. (That doesn't mean you don't get to tell us!) No matter what happens, I'll still read that passage and hear Lena Horne singing "Stormy Weather".

Sandra Leigh said...

Oh, look what happened! Congratulations, Barbara. (((applause)))

Kathryn Magendie said...

And, what's cool is you all gave me other ideas that work really well for that scene!

stormy weather
god bless the child
et cetera!

this was wonderful! Thank You all!
